IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR MAN?

Murder, rape, child abuse, spousal abuse, violent crime, kidnapping, robbery, abortion, war, starvation, abuse of elderly, sickness, disease, pain, suffering, loneliness, poverty, homelessness, despair, hopelessness . . . These are the headlines facing us day in and day out. These are the desperate situations that may even be raging in our own private worlds and lives. What is the meaning of life? Is this all there is? Why is life so hard? Is there no relief, no help, and no hope?

IN THE BEGINNING...

The world did not start out like this. The bible tells us in Genesis 1:1 that "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth", and all within the earth, in 6 days. Each day as His progressive work of creation was completed, God pronounced that "It was good." The 6th day He created the man and the woman, in His own image. He blessed them, and gave to them, everything upon the earth, to tend, to rule over, to care for. And Genesis 1:31 tells us "And God saw ALL that He had made, and behold, it was VERY GOOD. And there was evening and morning, the sixth day. "

On the 7th day, God rested from His labors.

The world was complete, beautiful, majestic, PARADISE! Every day God came and walked with Adam in the garden, in the cool of the day. They had sweet fellowship together. But sadly, by the second chapter of the bible, the man and his wife had doubted God's words and His love for them. They were persuaded by a lie, and doubted the truth.

God had given them every good thing. He offered one warning, for their protection, that was to leave the tree alone, in the center of the garden, that contained fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. God warned them in Genesis 2:17 "From the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it, you WILL SURELY DIE." Yet Satan, the deceiver, the enemy of God, and enemy of God's precious crowning creation - mankind, caused them to question God's word, His love, His motives toward them. And they sadly fell for the lie, which promised them they would be like God. Immediately after the act of disobedience, they knew it was all a lie, but it was too late.

What followed was painful, heartbreaking for all involved in that terrible day. First, God's heart was broken. Adam, the man had hidden from Him when He came to the garden that day.(Sin breaks man's fellowship with God.) God questioned Adam, then Eve, and then the serpent who had tricked them. God then pronounced a curse upon the serpent, that he should crawl on his belly and be despised by all; and pronounced a curse upon Eve, promising pain in childbirth, and marred husband/wife relationships.

Then God spoke to Adam and cursed him, promising toil, burdensome labors all his days, and God also cursed the beautiful creation with thorns and thistles, hard ground that would yield crops reluctantly, to the man. And then, in Genesis 3:21 the bible tells us that "The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them." This is a significant action, for the sin, the wrong committed, called for the slaughter of an innocent .. . an animal who's blood was shed and skin taken, and fashioned by God, into a "covering" for the man and his wife. (Sin must be paid for - someone must pay.) This is the first recorded sacrifice. A sacrifice is a symbolic transfer of sin from the guilty to the innocent, after which the innocent must be put to death, to "put one's sins to death." After the sacrifice had been made, the man and his wife's sin had been "covered", they were driven out of the garden by God . . away from the paradise He had created for them, away from the easy friendship with God, they had enjoyed. In that day they began to die, as God had promised they would if they disobeyed and ate from that tree. They died a spiritual death immediately; they were separated from the sweet fellowship and favor of God. They would also begin to die physically. Romans 6:23 ~ "For the wages of sin is death . ." And we will learn the rest of that verse further down!

Yet God, in His big heart of love, had a plan . . a way to bring the man back to Himself. But God could not overlook sin. It must be punished as had been promised. But when pronouncing the curses in the garden that day, God also made a statement that contained hope in the midst of despair. In Genesis 3:15 God said to the serpent, the devil, "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel." Here is the first beautiful promise of God, to redeem His people! It was a promise that through a woman, would come one who would strike a mortal blow to the enemy, the devil . . . a head wound, one which would be fatal. In the process He would also be wounded, but not mortally, for the heel wound signifies that though He would be wounded, He would prevail! Though Adam and Eve were driven from the beautiful garden that day, they took the promise of a redeemer with them.

Why was covering necessary?(What's so bad about sin, anyway?) God, who is holy and perfect in all His ways, cannot look upon sin. God will have nothing to do with sin. Sin is ugly, abhorrent, offensive to a holy God. And sin cannot enter heaven. So if we are sinners, and we are, then we have no hope of ever enjoying a relationship with God. In order to have fellowship restored between God and man, the sin must be paid for, or atoned for. God's justice must be satisfied. Of course, the sacrifice system was symbolic of the future time when Jesus, the perfect, sinless, holy, Son of God would take the sin upon Himself, then be slaughtered, and give His righteousness in exchange, make CLEAN those who would trust in Him.

For generations after Adam, mankind increased in wickedness. Yet God continued to promise one who would one day redeem His people from their sin, provide a way to once again be clean, and have fellowship with God.

Then, in God's perfect time, Jesus entered our sinful, wicked, dirty, lost world - lived a perfect sinless life. And in God's appointed time, He was put to death, bearing the full weight of our sin, and in those hours on the cross, God turned His back on Jesus, not able to look upon the extreme, total weight of the ugliness of sin. II Corinthians 5:21 says " He made Him who knew NO sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." Jesus died, alone, separated from the sweet fellowship of God, in order to satisfy God's righteous demands, and reconcile us to God. Romans 5:8 says "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

Hear these powerful words from the apostle Peter, after Jesus was raised from the dead and ascended to heaven. From Acts 2:22-24, 36-38 ~ "Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know - this Man, delivered up by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. And God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its' power. Therefore, let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ - this Jesus whom you crucified." Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" And Peter said to them, "REPENT, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." When God raised Jesus from the dead, He affirmed to all the world that His death was sufficient. Jesus' death on that cross satisfied God's righteous demands that sin must be punished. Jesus was punished on our behalf, that we might be able to be reconciled to God. Romans 5:1 says Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Friends, today do you feel like an enemy of God? Or perhaps you don't consider yourself an enemy, but you do not know the living God. If you have never repented of your sins, agreed with God that you are a sinner, and received Christ, trusting in Him to save you, then beloved, you are sadly, His enemy... but keep reading. There is a remedy for this condition of the soul.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

Do you feel something is missing in your life? Do you have peace about this life and the life to come, or are you fearful, uncertain of the future? There is life after death. The bible says in Hebrews 9:27 " It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgement." The righteous, those who's sins have been covered by the blood of Christ, will go into eternal rest and joy, into the presence of God where we will enjoy Him forever. Those who believed not and never trusted in Christ for forgiveness of their sins, will go into eternal damnation. Both will be alive forever. If you are not sure that you know Jesus and He knows you, this is a scary thought.. living forever in torment, separated from God for all eternity.

Does your heart feel pierced like those who heard Peter's sermon that day long ago? Are you feeling guilt, a weight of sin that you cannot rid yourself of? Do you long for peace? Does your own heart cry out for forgiveness and cleansing? God longs to forgive you, cleanse you, and give you peace in Christ. Or perhaps instead, you wonder what's the big deal - why is sin so bad? Or maybe you think "I haven't ever committed any really bad sins."

Beloved, any sin torments. Isaiah 48:22 says "There is no peace for the wicked"

Any sin separates you from God. Isaiah 59:2 says "Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He does not hear."

Any sin enslaves you. John 8:34 says "Jesus answered them and said "truly truly I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin."

Any sin excludes you from heaven. I Corinthians 6:9 says "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?

Any sin ends in death. Romans 6:23 says "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord."

WHAT CAN I DO?
HOW TO HAVE PEACE WITH GOD

So what must you do to be saved? God, in His great love, has provided a way through Jesus Christ! Your part is to receive! John 1:12 says "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name." Romans 10:13 says "For whoever will call upon the name of the Lord, will be saved."
Are you a sinner?                   God saves sinners!

REPENT! This means turn around, change direction! Change your mind! Agree with God that yes, you are in deed, word, and thought - a sinner. Acts 2:38 Peter says, "Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins."

RECEIVE HIM! You need the Savior! Receive Him into your heart and your life. Remember, to those who received Him, He gave the right to become children of God.

BE BORN AGAIN This is what God does for you, beloved. This is the new birth! It is a miracle of spiritual life performed by God's Holy Spirit. John 3:3 says "Jesus said unto him, "Truly I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of heaven."

REJOICE PUBLICALLY Romans 10:9-10 says "If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart, man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth, he confesses, resulting in salvation." TELL what God has done for you!

REQUEST BAPTISM Baptism is an outward sign pointing to what has happened within your heart. Acts 2:38 says " Peter said to them, "Repent and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

READ THE BIBLE The word of God is the source of your faith. The bible is God's loveletter to you! It contains words of love, how He loves you and has rescued you, and will bring you safely home to heaven when this life is ended. I John 5:13 says "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life."

PRAY! Prayer is conversation with God. Your life is sustained by union and communion with God. Ephesians 6:18, James 4:2 says "And this is the confidence which we have before Him, that if we ask anything, according to His will, He hears us. And we know that if He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him."

RESIST THE DEVIL It is not a sin to be tempted. It is yielding to that temptation, that is sin. Hebrews 4:15 says "For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things, as we are, yet He sinned not."
I Peter 1:7 says "That the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revealing of Jesus Christ."

MAKE RESTITUTION God has removed your guilt. Acts 24:16 says "In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always, a blameless conscience both before God and before men." If you can make right, sins you have committed against another, go and do it! You will experience the exhilarating freedom that comes from knowing you are forgiven!

GO TO CHURCH! Begin to associate with God's people.Hebrews 10:24,25 says "Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encourage one another, and all the more, as you see the day drawing near."

Maybe you want to talk to God about these things. Maybe today is the day that you want your heart cleansed, that you want to have peace with God, and His presence with you throughout the rest of your life, and then to dwell with Him in that beautiful place He is preparing for those who love Him. It's very easy to talk to God; He is waiting for you to come, so that He can wrap his arms of love around you and bring you safely into His fold. Maybe the following prayer can guide you as you express your heart's desire to God, to know Him and enjoy fellowship with Him forever.

Dear Lord, I know I am a sinner and that I can't save myself—I am HELPLESS. I need YOU. I believe that You sent Jesus, Your only Son, to die on the cross for MY sins. Would you come in and take control of my life, for you created me, have loved me always, and know how to keep me safe throughout this life, and the life to come! Thank You, Lord, for this great gift of forgiveness, and peace with You, and thank You for all You are going to do in my life and in my heart, to make me more like Jesus. Amen

If you prayed this prayer earnestly to God, you can be sure that He has received you as one of His own, and He will never let you go! You are eternally secure! The bible tells us in Colossians 1:13-14 ~ "He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins!"
